Solenoids

If the function of your machinery involves the remote control of liquids or gases, selecting the right solenoid valve can make all the difference in its operation. Consideration should be given to what type of fluid (liquid or gas) that will be going through the valve and the material that the seals will have to be made from to avoid corrosion. Also the temperature and pressure as well as the rate of flow of the system. The cycle life of the solenoid may have to be thought of as well. Compatibility with other system components and system voltage should be factored in.

The operation of a solenoid valve is simple: when a magnetic coil is energized, the magnetic field moves an actuator rod that controls a valve. Some valves open when energized, some close.

Normally Closed Solenoid Valves

Most solenoid valves are normally-closed. That is to say the valve is closed in the solenoids rested or de-energized state and open when the solenoid is energized or current is applied to the coil. Fluid flow is blocked except when the solenoid valve is energized and opens. We have normally closed solenoid valves available with 24 volt and 120 volt coils.

There are many body materials including brass, stainless steel, PVC, polypropylene and nylon. Sizes of orifice, size of inlet and outlet and type of seal material are available to suit most every need.

Normally Open Solenoid Valves

The other type of solenoid valves are normally-open. That is to say the valve is open in the solenoids rested or de-energized state and closes when the solenoid is energized or current is applied to the coil. Fluid is free to flow except when the solenoid valve is energized and closes. We have normally-open solenoid valves available with 24 volt and 120 volt coils.

Many configurations of the normally-open solenoid valve are available as well.

Manifolds

Solenoid valves mounted on a single block of material are known as a manifold. The manifold is typically made of brass but can be any body material, the block has a common inlet port for supply to all valves on both ends. Stock manifolds are available for from one to five but any number can be set up.

Solenoids For Special Applications

Some solenoid valves are designed for a specific application and some are specialized. For example we have slow opening and slow closing solenoid valves. There are also diaphragm type valves for smoother operation. Some valves are designed in combination with other functions; a solenoid valve with a Y-type filter built in.
