Tip Protectors

Tip protectors do more than just protect your spray tips and spray nozzles from being banged by careless self-serve customers. Most spray tips are metal and will make a ding if swung into a body panel with adequate force. Even a light tap can make paint chip or a scratch if the point of a spray tip or spray nozzle makes contact. Car body damage can and does occur. And that is what can really cost you. Even if you don't have to pay for repairs, angry customers may not come back. Automatics can be just as bad if not worse.

Tip protectors protect a vehicle's finish from being damaged by the spray tip or nozzle. On the other hand, when a spray tip or nozzle gets dropped onto the pavement over and over the orifice can get distorted. If the orifice is distorted, the spray pattern will be changed and the washing effectiveness of the tip will be altered. The result is that the wash doesn't produce as well as it should, a spray tip will not get its full useful life and ends up costing money to be replaced.

Push On Tip Protector

Windtrax sells a wide variety of spray tip protectors from several manufacturers. The most basic type of spray tip protector is the push on type. This type of spray tip protector very simply presses on to the spray tip and is held in place by friction. The two push on types that Windtrax stocks are the Spraying Systems JetGuard  item number CP26110-PUR and the Suttner Tip Protector item number ST005.

Bell Style

With the bell style of tip protector, the spray tip or spray nozzle is screwed into the protector. This style of spray tip protector functions the same way as a fitting between the spray tip or spray nozzle and the wand or gun. Consideration must be taken of which threads are being used. The bell style spray tip and spray nozzle protectors that Windtrax carries are the Suttner nozzle protector item number ST004/D with threads for either 1/8" or 1/4" spray tips and nozzles. Windtrax manufactures our very own line of spray tip and spray nozzle protectors we call dingbats. Dingbats are available in sizes to fit various combinations of wands and tips and in a self-serve style and a style intended for automatics which uses a larger bell. Windtrax self-serve dingbats item numbers start with DB-SS. Windtrax dingbats for automatics item numbers start with DB-ATO.

Tips On Spray Tips

Reprinted from the Windtrax catalog:

Tips On Spray Tips
• Undersized piping systems or pump capacity often leads to poor system performance. When designing such systems, it is extremely important to ensure that the selected pumps can meet the flow rate requirements of the nozzle.

• Never try to clean plugged nozzles with any sharp metal tools, as this will always damage the orifice and distort the spray pattern. Always soak spray tips in a solvent and use something soft like a toothbrush or toothpick, and then blow out the plugged material with compressed air.

• Since VeeJet nozzles have a tapered spray distribution, they must be overlapped with adjoining nozzles. As a general rule of thumb, a total of 30% overlap is suggested.
